This novel set in a small coal-mining village in Nottinghamshire is often regarded as autobiographical, as so much of it mirrors Lawrence's early life and upbringing. It tells the story of the Morel family. The protagonist of the novel is Paul, the younger son of Gertrude and Walter Morel.
