'A Duel' is a romance novel by Richard Marsh. At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to Isabel, a young woman who is having financial troubles, and received a letter from her mother-in-law thinking her family might be relieved of her burdens, only to find out that her husband has hoodwinked her all this time; for he is no child of the aristocracy—he is instead a child of a struggling shopkeeper in Islington!
